What is an AA Meeting?

AA is a program developed to help alcoholics get sober. It is free to attend an AA Meeting in Charlotte, Iowa as the funding is donated from its members.

AA is one of most commonly recognized programs in the United States and around the world that helps countless men and women overcome their alcohol addiction in the pursuit of lifelong recovery. They are commonly made up of small groups of individuals who share their recovery journey and are there to help new members get sober.

How to Choose an AA Meeting in Charlotte, Iowa

It is important when coming to AA that you pick a meeting that is suited for where you are at in sobriety. The 1st type of meeting is a new comers meeting and is not limited to only new comers but is a meeting that motivates them to share their stories and ask for help. Another type of meeting would be a gender specific meeting, which is only open to either men or women. A Closed meeting simply means the group is closed to any discussion that does not involve how to stay sober from alcohol. Talking about any other substance use addictions is not allowed. A Step Study is a gathering that is simply focused on a single step and discussed in length regarding the best approach to working this step and applying it to your daily life. Traditions meetings are focused on the 12 traditions of AA. The 12 traditions are different than the 12 steps. The traditions were implemented to maintain order throughout AA and holding each group accountable to these traditions is the reason you can join an Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting anywhere in across the globe to hear the same message.

How to get the most out of your initial AA meeting in Charlotte, Iowa

To get the most out of your initial AA meeting you need to walk through the front door with an open mind, and the willingness to change. Make sure to arrive 30 minutes early and stay 30 minutes after because there is always a “before” and “after” for every meeting, where the members of the group gather outside and talk. Make sure during opening remarks that you raise your hand to let the group know this is your first meeting. Make sure to request a meeting list, with contact information of the group members. Last, but certainly not least don’t hesitate to raise your hand and speak, share the journey that lead you to this meeting.
